No doubt about it, nonsmokers are winning the war. The country is far down the road toward a society where smoking is banned in restaurants, offices, theaters - all the places where nonsmokers gather. Nonsmokers are now a growing majority as millions of Americans abandon the habit or decide not to start. Even a decade ago few people would have predicted a public-health victory of such magnitude against a substance as habit-forming as tobacco. Yet the victory is not complete. Some 53 million Americans have not surrendered: they continue to smoke. Do they have any rights that should be protected?

Yes. As long as smoking is legal they have the right to smoke, even if that means risking their own health. But they do not have the right to put the health of nonsmokers at risk. In 1986 *the Surgeon General stated that smoke in the area threatens the health of nonsmokers, which makes it necessary to limit the right to smoke to places where it does not endanger other people.

That's where the trouble starts. It should be possible for offices and commercial establishments to provide separate, well-ventilated smoking areas. But in many places smokers are practically being forced to stop, even where smoking areas can easily be provided. Some companies won't hire smokers, and many more forbid smoking anywhere in their buildings. Some nonsmokers seem to enjoy treating smokers with a self-righteous rudeness that even many people who have given up the habit find offensive.

That simply won't do. Some companies justify total bans on smoking by saying they just want to keep their employees healthy. Then why not require employees to stop drinking, eat a good breakfast, exercise regularly, and go to bed early? The risks of smoking should not be made light of, and by all means let's protect nonsmokers from pollution. But there are limits on how far business or anybody else can go to prevent smoking. For their own good, smokers should stop smoking, but the most effective pressure is probably the example provided by the vast majority of people who do not smoke.

Education is the process by which people acquire knowledge, skills, habits, values, or attitudes. The word education is also used to describe the results of the educational process. Education] should help people become useful members of society. It should also help them develop an appreciation of their *cultural heritage and live more satisfying lives. The most common way to get an education is to attend school. But much education also takes place outside the classroom.

Education involves both learning and teaching. Sometimes, people learn by teaching themselves. But they also learn with the help of other people, such as parents or teachers. Parents are a child's first and perhaps most important teachers. Parents teach their children attitudes, habits, and values that help shape their character and remain with them throughout life. But few parents have either the time or the ability to teach their children everything they need to know. Instead, they turn over many educational responsibilities to professional educators. Teachers and schools have the chief responsibility for education. The organized instruction they provide is called formal education. Learning that results from less-organized instruction is called informal education]. Churches, which are established mainly for worship, educate their members through church teachings. Libraries, newspapers, and such organizations as the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts also educate people. Radio and television are especially effective means of education. For example, various TV programs provided by public television stations give millions of children in the United States valuable learning experiences.

1) This book is mine.

2) You know my sister.

3) We play tennis.

4) I go to school .

(1) Tom usually gets up at seven twenty.

(2) Sachiko read an English book last night.

(3) Mrs.Kato knows my brother and me very well.

(4) How do you go to the department store?

(5) Mr.Sato has a large car.

(6) They played tennis in the park last Sunday.

(7) Mie writes a letter to her parents every Saturday.

(8) Does Emi wash the dishes?

(9) Ken's notebook was on the desk yesterday.

(10) Our school begins at nine in the morning.

(1) Tom usually gets up / at seven twenty.

(2) Sachiko read an English book / last night.

(3) Mrs.Kato knows my brother and me / very well.

(4) How do you go / to the department store?

(5) Mr.Sato has a large car.

(6) They played tennis / in the park / last Sunday.

(7) Mie writes a letter / to her parents / every Saturday.

(8) Does Emi wash the dishes?

(9) Ken's notebook was / on the desk / yesterday.

She is beautiful.

(10) Our school begins / at nine in the morning.

一般動詞では do / does / did の助動詞をSの前に出します。

be動詞の文:S+be動詞+not+~
S+do[does / did] +not+動詞(原形)

Many a man complains bitterly that his wife will not attempt to reason things out. Many a wife feels that her husband is all reason, able to argue about anything under the sun, but never able to go straight to the truth as she feels she can. The truth is that, generally speaking, men are rational, and women intuitive.

Needless to say, women are no more guided exclusively by intuition than men are by reason. There are women whose make-up includes an almost masculine approach to life. There are men ― especially those with artistic gifts ― who possess marked intuitive tendencies.

If the husband will keep this fact in mind, it will help him avoid one basic error which causes an immense amount of disagreement and friction. It is a mistake for him to use cold reasoning to overcome anything which he cannot understand in his wife. The wife who feels deeply about something or other may well feel like screaming, and indeed may do so, if she is confronted with a series of arguments, however logical they may be. Indeed, the more persuasive the arguments, the more irritating they are bound to be.

The wise husband realizes that a woman's intuition is part of her basic make-up, and must therefore be respected. He will accept the undeniable fact that it is a quality which often yields flashes of genius and reaches areas of truth that mere reasoning can never find. He will seek to understand his wife, not to try to make her reason as he does. The greater the understanding, the deeper the admiration. There will grow a feeling of wonder that this gift of intuition can so often solve problems which a reasoning brain can work on for hours and still not answer.

     「~になる」 become / get / go など

     「~している」know (知っている) / resemble (似ている)

       He had dinner.

     He became a student.

the child in the room

     run fast (速く走る)

a pork cutlet served (with egg and vegetables) on top of a bowl of rice

I ate a fried beef bowl for breakfast this morning.

I went to the museum by taxi.

I study English for an hour every day.

I have never been to Okinawa.
